In the Virginia colony there appeared a RICHARD (1) HAMBLET of James City County, VA. 1n 1655.

DAVID HAMBLET (1) of New Kent County, VA, appeared in 1665, ten years later.

      JOHN HAMBLET (2)
Lived in Charles City County, VA in 1705, forty years after David -Possible son? Grandson?

There was also a THOMAS (H)? (1) HAMLET who died in Richmond Co.VA. In 1725-6?

[NOTE- In 1734 GRANVILLE CO. NC SEPARATED FROM MONTGOMERY]

ARCHIBALD (1) HAMLET was born 1750 in Amherst Co, VA and died 1796 in Rockfish Co., VA. May well have been the son of David or John above. Archibald married Susanna BURGESS in 1775 (during the revolution). Susanna was the daughter of William Burgess. Susanna (1755-1827) died in Nelson Co. VA., thirty-one years after Archibald.

CHILDREN OF ARCHIBALD AND SUSANNA BURGESS HAMLET

      NANCY b.1789 in VA- d. before 1819.
FANNY b.1790 in VA, m. John WRIGHT 2/9/1817- NELSON CO VA.
LUCY HAMLET who was born in VA in 1790. She married William Coleman (or CAMPBELL) KIDD on 10/17/1811.
WILLIAM BURGESS b.1791-m. Candice Cecil WITT on 9/17/1809
      THOMAS b.1792- m. Nancy FLORA (3/10/1808

SUSANNA b. 1795- NELSON CO VA- m. William Isaac KIDD b. 1793, in AMHERST CO VA- d. 9/6/1857 in AMHERST.

There is also an ARTHUR HAMBLET who married SARAH (SUSANNA) CRUTCHFIELD in CHARLES CITY CO, VA on 5/28/1811

The son of Arthur and Sarah Hamblet was EDWARDS JENNINGS HAMBLET b. 8/26/1817 in VA

      18TH CENTURY HAMLETS

The First Hamblet recorded in NC actually appeared in the far western region of SURRY CO. SURRY was formed from ROWAN IN 1771. BURKE from Rowan-1777- (Morganton).

      CHARLES (1) HAMBLET
Is recorded in Surry County, NC in 1771, which is right on the VA border, and he almost certainly came into the county from directly north in Virginia- probably the Lynchburg area from Richmond on the RICHMOND-LYNCHBURG CANAL or “up” the Shenandoah Valley (south). (Please note that he could have come from the Mass. Hamlets through NY to Philadelphia and on the GREAT PHILADELPHIA WAGON ROAD-(SEE MIGRATION MAP) which ended around Surry/Wilkes/Watauga Co., area of NC.

There is a NANCY ANN HAMBLET, b.1775 IN CASWELL (LATER PERSON) CO, NC, the daughter of JAMES HAMBLET, of PRINCE EDWARD CO, VA who received a land grant to Caswell Co, NC in 1783- perhaps a reward for service in Rev. War? JAMES married FRANCIS MOORE in NC. NANCY ANN apparently married JOHN WATSON.

See PERSON CO., NC records for 11/15/1793 concerning JAMES HAMLET who died in 1792 leaving a plantation of over 1,000 acres – one-third to his widow, FRANCES MOORE and the remainder equally to his five sons.

      1.THOMAS HAMLET.
2.JOHN HAMLET, who may have married a girl named ELIZABETH. Or she might be a sister?
3.ROBERT HAMLET (who may have married a PHEOBE VAN HOOK possibly from HALIFAX, VA who moved to ORANGE CO. NC (Chapel Hill area) when it changed to PERSON COUNTY (Person formed from Caswell in 1770’s?) POSSIBLE CONNECTION TO PETER 1 SR?

      4.JESSE HAMLET.

      AND 5. JAMES HAMLET, JR.

Each boy’s section was valued at 508 pounds.

Other children of James Hamlet, SR. POLLY HAMLET, FANNY, KITTY, NANNY (NANCY ANN?), MARTHA, LUCY, PEGGY, AND ANNE HAMLET.

On September 17,1792, FRANCES HAMLET petitioned the court of PERSON CO. for the right to guardianship of Lucy and Anne.

On 4/16/1821 FRANCES HAMLET’S (d. 1820?) land was divided among the same sons. The widow’s section was valued at sixty-eight pounds, four shillings, and eight pence, equal to one-fourteenth of the estate?

The next Hamblet to pop up in NC records is down near the SC border in ANSON COUNTY. In 1779 and 1780, not near the VA border but way down south, Peter, Sr. is listed as in attendance. PETER (1) Sr. HAMLET is the first (b. 1762) Hamblet or Hamlet that records indicate is our exact line of the Hamblet family. In the late 1700’s, Anson was the farthest west county in the state, and cheap or free land was probably available for homesteaders.

Having lived in Anson during the first years of the American Revolution, PETER 1 SR. next appears three years later in 1782 in MONTGOMERY COUNTY (SALISBURY?) along with another Hamblet named JOHN 3 HAMBLET - perhaps his brother or his son?

In 1782 about the time the colonies won independence from England, another Hamblet entered NC, this time in WARREN COUNTY - bordering on the VA line directly south of Richmond area. This was RICHARD 2 HAMBLET. There is a RICHARD HAMBLET OF CASWELL CO, NC in 1797 and an R. HAMBLETT IN 1810 with two “T’s”, and another RICHARD (RICHARD, JR OR A BROTHER?), but the second Richard spelled his name with only one “T”. Or the recorder could have just spelled it two different ways on the same day. I’m sure that often happened. The Richard of 1797 was married to KITTY JONES, daughter of RICHARD AND MILDRED JONES.

In 1790 and again in 1799 the tax rolls for MONTGOMERY COUNTY, NC indicate that JOHN 3 and PETER (1) were residents of Salisbury, NC (now different county-Rowan?). PETER 1 probably died 1810-1820. PETER 1 had three daughters (unknown) and one son, PETER 2 A. HAMBLET (1787).

Also in the 1790 MONTGOMERY CO, NC census there appears a PETER (1) Sr. HAMBLET as a resident.

There is also an ELIZABETH HAMLET of Wilkes Co. who married JOESEPH HARRISON, Jr. described as a “Just and faithful Knight of God” and a famous early preacher in Wilkes/Watauga County. J. Harrison was born 2/4/1799 in Iredell (now Alexander Co) NC. Harrison served as Register of Deeds in Watauga from 1850-1860, but being a Union man, he left for the Civil War, and then he returned as Register from 1865-1870- a total of 15 years. Elizabeth was his first wife. He later married a Carolina Wolff, an Alice Baird (Methodist?) and then Albertine Bond. He founded the Brushy Fork Baptist Church in 1858.

In 1776 JESSE HAMBLET was born in Montgomery Co. (map #5) and the son of JOHN 3 is listed as living in ANSON COUNTY.

JESSE married SALLY GATEWOOD born in 1778 in ANSON CO, NC. Sally Gatewood was from ANSON CO, NC and the daughter of ROBERT AND MARY GATEWOOD. They had five daughters. Sally was 5th and youngest. Robert Gatewood was born in VA and died after 5/25/1790 in Anson Co., son of Thomas Gatewood, b. 1682-1689 in Rappahannock Co, VA and died between 1748-49 in Essex VA, son of John and Amie Gatewood, b.1650, probably in England and died between 1706-07 in Essex, VA.

Daughters of Jesse and Sally were SARAH (SALLY) HAMBLET b. Montgomery Co, NC 1811 and married to THOMAS NELSON 8/31/1831 in Jefferson, TN. Thomas was born in 1783 in Wisconsin (NOT EVEN A STATE THEN). Daughter number five. Children of Sally Hamlet and Thomas Nelson were as follows.

WILLIAM, 1832 IN TN., SARAH J,, B. 1834 IN IOWA., THOMAS H. IN ILLINOIS, ISAAC W.,B. 1845 IN ILLINOIS, AND GEORGE W, B. 1849 IN ILLINOIS.

NANCY HAMLET (1805-1898) Born in Salisbury, Montgomery Co, Nancy married RICHARD LEMASTER, JR. in 1836. Richard Lemaster was born in Shelby Co, KY and died 1/19/1845 on the Cherokee Indian Reservation-ARKANSAS?. They were married nine years. (Richard Sr.’s wife was HANNA?) RICHARD LEMASTER was born 2/5/1796. Died in Frog Bayou, Van Buren Township, Crawford Co, Arkansas. They were married in Arkansas or Iowa. Nancy is daughter number one.

Nancy’s second husband was ARTIMAS “LIBERTY” MILLET in 1849 in KANESVILLE, POTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, IOWA. “Liberty” was the son of EBENEZER (CAPT) MILLET AND CATHERINE DRYDEN. CAPT was born 9/11/1790 in Westmoreland, Cheshire Co. New Hampshire And died 11/19/1847 in Scipio, Millard Co. UTAH.

Nancy’s third husband was WILLIAM MILLS on 2/27/1821 in Jefferson Co, TN. William was born about 1801.

Nancy’s 4th husband was ANDREW MORTON HAMILTON, born in CHILLICOTHE, OHIO on 4/29/1809 and died 8/17/1894 in Springfield, Utah Co., UTAH. He was the son of JAMES HAMILTON AND MARGARET BAKER.

NANCY died in CASTLE DALE, EMERY COUNTY, UTAH.

ELIZABETH HAMLET (1807 in Montgomery Co), daughter of Jesse and Sally, married JACK HARRELL b. 1796 in Montgomery Co., NC. She is daughter number 2.

JANE HAMLET, daughter number three, was born 5/3/1808 in NC. She married HEZEKIAH TAGUE on 1/26/1828. Tague b. 1804 in Montgomery Co., NC. (TEAGUE?) SUSANNA HAMLET, b. 1810 married JESSE MILLS on 2/13/1819 in Henderson, Jefferson Co., TN. Jesse b. 1810 in Montgomery Co. NC.

In 1800 THOMAS HAMBLET And JOHN 3? And WILLIAM (2) HAMBLET Also appear back in ANSON COUNTY back where that branch appears to have started in NC- the “old home place”? Possible source of rumor that the family came from ”Down near Charlotte somewhere”- Anson is “near” Charlotte if you’re from Blowing Rock. HAMLET, NC would be just south of Asheboro and just east of Charlotte- Wadesboro area. Blowing Rock was the eventual destination.

By 1810 there is a HAMBLET in the MONTGOMERY CO. NC census, and there are still some Hamblets in other counties, but Peter 1 Sr. was finally ready to start the move west along the Yatkin River toward new lands in the New River area around Blowing Rock, NC up from Lenoir, NC area and near the NC/ TN/ VA border. The old home place for that section was there.

In 1820 in Montgomery Co., there is a JAMES HAMLIT (ONE ‘I’) on the tax rolls.

There appear to be no Hamlets in the ORANGE CO census of 1830 or 1840, so the family may have moved west about the late 1820”s? toward Watauga Co.

There is an ORAN HAMLET b.1829 in CHATHAM CO., NC in the 1850 ORANGE CO. census who was a carpenter. In the 1790 CHATHAM CO. census there is a WILLIAM HAMLET.In the index to CHATHAM CO FOR 1800 there is an UNKNOWN HAMLET AND A WILLIAM HAMLET living in the Hillsborough District. In 1810 the same two without first names are listed. In 1820 there is a HAMBLET (with a “b”- possible misspelling of one of the Hamlets above. In 1830 there is a HAMLET. In 1840 there are THREE Hamlets listed in the index in1850.CHATHAM COUNTY HAMLETS IN 1850 CENSUS.ELIZA- b.1825, FRANCIS- b.1824, JAMES b.1803, JULIA (MOTHER?)b.1790, JULIA (DAUGHTER ?) b.1804, LUVANIA b.1849, MARY 1825- (same as Eliza), ORAN b. 1830, RICHARD b.1834, and SYDNEY S. b.1813.
