    • From Jennifer Lair Halpin, 2/2011:

Thomas Howard Lair served as an 8th Air Force pilot in WWII and was shot down over Germany, where he was in prison camp until 1945. He
came home from the war to Canyon, Texas where he lived until his death in 1985. He had very clear memories of his grandfather, George Washington Avent. The photo of George Washington Avent and Tom was taken in Canyon in about 1920, when Tom was about 2 years old. Tom told about how his grandfather talked about the civil war and how he remembered that as an old man his grandfather would sit in the the town square in Canyon (near the Randall Co. courthouse) with other old men to pass the days. If one of George Washington's grandchildren happened to run by, GW would wave his cane out to rap his grandchild as they went by and always call out that "that is one of mine".
