Hi Cathy,
From “World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918” we find: Name: Killis Granvill Nappier City: Not Stated County: Jackson State: Louisiana Birthplace: Louisiana Birth Date: 18 Oct 1896 Age: 21 (in 1918) Residence: Hodge, LA Born: 10/18/1896, Vienna, LA Father’s birthplace: Vienna, LA Nearest relative Alma Nappier, Hodge, LA
This gives us his date of birth, and since the wife’s name is ‘Alma’ we know we have the right guy.
From the 1900 US census, Louisiana, Lincoln Parish, Police Jury Ward 5:
Nappier, Thomas, Jun, 1872, m. 6 yrs, b. LA, father b. GA, mother b. AL Nancy, wife, Apr 1876, m. 6 yrs, b. LA, father b. AL, mother b. AL Cora L., dau, Sept 1894 Killis G., son, Oct 1896 Clarra E., dau, Dec 1898
The “Oct 1896” DOB shows that we have the right guy again, and this lists his two sisters, Cora and Clara, as well as his parents.
The 1880 US census, Louisiana, Lincoln Parish, 5th Ward has:
Killis Nappier, age 45, farm Laborer born Alabama, both parents born AL Lidia Nappier, wife, age 35, born AL, both parents born AL Mary, age 11, at school, born Louisiana James, age 9 born LA Thomas, age 6 born LA
This gives us a year of birth of 1874 for Thomas, which is off by a couple of years from the 1900 census above, but that’s not unusual for census records. Considering that Thomas’ father is namaed Killis, and Thomas named his son Killis, and that Killis is a very unusual first name, I think it’s probably the right Thomas Nappier.
From U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865 we have:
Name: Killis Napper Side: Confederate Regiment State/Origin: Alabama Regiment Name: Camp of Instruction, Talladega, Alabama
We can’t be positive, but I feel reasonably sure that this is the same Killis Nappier who is the father of Thomas. If I find anything else, I’ll let you know. Hope this helps –
Steve Avent
