I don't know how

My father was Charles Young Avent, and his father was John William Avent. At one time, my father said that we were decended from France and another time, we were from Italian "Aventine".

I would like to trace my family, but have no idea, how to go about it. If anyone can help, please email me at charlessouthaven at AOL.
