Recently the autho r received an e-mail from a reader in Louisiana, containing additional in fo rmation on Piper and his family. According to Ten Generations in Ame ric a, published in 1933 by W. Edwin Auld Remley, Michael married Rosanna But ton in Ireland. They came to the colonies about 1717, and according to th e Lambeth Palace Library Papers, he was in Philadelphia on October 23, 17 18. Mr. Remley reported that he came from Ireland in the 1700's an d was a member of the Church of England. Michael and Rosanna had a daught er Rosa nna, born in 1723, who married Howes Goldsborough in 1745, and, a fter his death in 1746, married as her second husband James Auld. James a nd Rosan na lived in Dorchester County where James was a lawyer in the Fi shing Cre ek area. In 1765 they moved to Halifax County, North Carolina, and subseq uently to Anson County, North Carolina. They had eight childre n. James di ed in 1782, and Rosanna in 1792. ===== Piper, Michael, AA, was teaching by 1721 when Michael Piper, present Register and School-mast er of Annapo lis, petitioned the vestry for a small quantity of ground wh ere his dead lie buried at the east end of the church. The petition was a llowed and he is to have seven square feet of ground (SAVP: MHM 7:79). Th e Minister, v estry, and church wardens decided that the schoolmaster of Annapolis and the charity boys on the foundation of the school in Annapol is, be permitt ed, during the vacancy of the Asssembly, constantly to sit in the front s eat joining to the back door until such time as further p rovision can be made for them (SAVP: MHM 7:80). Piper, Michael, on 7 Nov 1720 was chosen register of St. Anne's Parish in place of John Talbot (SA VP 7:74). (See P MHB 61:370n). On 5 Dec 1721: Michael Piper, present Regi ster and School-m aster of Annapolis, petitioned the vestry for a small q uantity of ground where his dead lie buried at the east end of the church . On 2 J uly 1723 Mrs. Piper and Elizabeth Piper were allowed to sit in the 2nd Pu blic Pew (SAVP: MHM 7:172). Financial Status: On 10 Jan 1724 Michael Pip er was to be allowed 500 lbs. tob. For last year's service as clerk of th e vestry, 50 lbs. Fo r transcribing the new act of the Assembly against p rofaning the Sabbath, and another 150 lbs. For transcribing the two table s hanging in the Chur ch One the Table of Marriages, and the other the Ta ble of Donations of se veral gentlemen towards the public buildings of th e city (SAVP: MHM 7:178 ). Michael Piper made a payment to the estate of Daniel Thompson, innhold er of AA Co., in the account filed 7 July 1726 ( MDAD 7:388). He was a deb tor of Edward Smith, listed in the administrati on account filed 19 July 1 726 (MDAD 8:474). He was also listed as a debt or in the account filed 20 Dec 1729 of Hughh Kennedy (MDAD 10:125). Backg round: He and his wife came to the colonies about 1717, and by 23 Oct 171 8 he was in Philadelphia (V . L. Auld cites W. Edwin Auld Remly, Ten Gene rations in America, and Lamb eth Palace Library Papers). Family: He marri ed Rosanna Button in Ireland. Rose Piper, wife of Michael Piper, Register of St. Anne's Parish, died 2 9 Nov 1724 in her 35th year (AACR:92). Mich ael and Rose were the parents of (AACR:88, 91, 92): JOHN, b. c1711, d. 8 Sep 1721; and ROSE ANNA, b. 22 Dec 1723, bapt. 29 Dec 1723 (godparents we re Capt. Thomas Larkin, Elizab eth Beale, and Mrs. Transum). Rosanna Pipe r, daughter of Michael and Rosa nna, married 1st, in 1745 Howes Goldsboro ugh, who died 1746. Rosanna m. 2 nd, in 1747, James Auld. They lived in D O Co., and then moved to halifax Co., NC (Letter from V. L. Auld).
