  • Notes
    • Isabel de Clare was born on 8 November 1226. She married Sir Robert de Brus, Lord Annandale, Sheriff of Cumberland, Governor of Carlisle Castle, son of Sir Robert de Brus, 4th Lord Annandale and Isobel of Huntingdon, in May 1240.

      Children
      Isabel has been credited with at least 6 or 7 children in various publications in the past (see below) but there seem to be at most four children that are confirmed by recent studies using evidence from the period;

      The following four are listed by Richardson in Royal Ancestry:

      Robert de Bruce, born in July 1243, and given Isabel's age probably the eldest child, succeeded his father as Lord of Annandale, and succeeded as Earl of Carrick through the rights of his wife,[1]
      Richard de Bruce, died before Jan 25, 1287.
      William de Bruce, died after 1295.
      Isabel de Bruce, m. (as his first wife) Sir John Fitz Marmaduke Knt., of Horden, Eighton, Lamesley, Ravensholm, and Silksworth, county Durham, Sheriff of North Durham, and Joint Warden beyond the Scottish Sea between the Forth and Orkney. He fought on the English side at the Battle of Falkirk, 22 July 1298, and was present at the Siege of Caerlaverock Castle in 1300. In 1307 he was commanded to assist the Earl of Richmond in expelling Robert de Brus and the Scottish rebels from Galloway. In 1309 his armour and provisions in a vessel bound for Perth were arrested off Great Yarmouth. He was governor of St. John's Town (Perth) in 1310 until his death.
      Disputed children
      Other sources also mentioned two other sons and two daughters;

      Sir Bernard of Connington and Exton, married first, Alicia de Clare, and second Constance de Morleyn, (Paul, p. 431) (seems more likely to be brother of Robert de Brus, not his son) (Richardson Royal Ancestry, Vol. 1 p 589 footnote 49)
      Mary, said to have married Ralph de Toeni, but Richardson (Richardson Royal Ancestry Vol 5, p 176 footnote and Plantagenet Ancestry p. 712) is unsure of this, though he does not claim it to be disproven.
      Other alleged children are surely bogus and will be removed.

      ? Some publications, including Weir, p. 207, have his father's second wife, Christian de Ireby as his mother, but the 1998 Corrigenda to the Complete Peerage and the 2013 Richardson Royal Ancestry make the first wife definitive.
