      The webmaster has been told that Sarah Elizabeth Dupree Avent's mother's sisters owned the slave Nat Turner, who led a well known slave uprising in nearby Southampton Co., VA, in the 1830's, and that she had several relatives who were murdered by Nat or his followers.

      Summary Letter, 9 March 1869, from Tamlin Avent (b. ca. 1800) of Greensville County, Virginia, to Mary Jane Greenway Avery Smith of Warren County, Mississippi, discussing how things have changed in Greensville County since she moved away, and commenting on a plantation she still owns in the county. He also writes about the effects of the Civil War on his family, his plantation, and Greensville County. There is also a typescript copy of the letter.

      Biog./Hist. Note Tamlin Avent (b. ca. 1800) resided in Greensville County, Virginia, and was a farmer. He and his wife Sarah E. Avent (b. ca. 1809) had three children.

      The following person was related to Tamlin, but not clear how:

      SAMUEL TAMLIN AVENT. Born in Hardeman County, Tennessee, on April 7, 1836. Both parents and his brother had died before 1850. The family had connections with Greenville County, Virginia, where he and sister Sarah inherited property in 1854, sharing equally with a kinsman, Tamlin Avent, a citizen of Greenville County who was a nephew of Peter Avent, who also lived in Hardeman County, and may have been Samuel's uncle. He was a master mason and a member of Hatchie Lodge #151 at Middleburg. Died December 19, 1896, and buried in the Avent-Marshall Cemetery. Parents: THOMAS W. AVENT (A12) and LUCINDA {????} (A13).     He was a prominent local politician before the war, and the oath of allegiance was necessary to apply for a pardon from the US government, which would enable him to hold public office again. It is unknown whether or not his petition was granted.
