  • Notes
    • Many sources say that Richard Webster Jr. had a 2nd wife named Mazy A. Stone, but I have found no evidence that she ever existed, much less that she and Richard were married. My opinion (though I have no proof for this) is that Richard’s 1st wife, Sarah Auld, had a middle name of ‘May’ (there are numerous references for this, though I have yet to find proof) and went by the nickname of ‘Mazy’, and it is she who is listed on the 1850 census as wife of Richard. Note that her name is given as 'Mazy A.', and the 'A' could stand for her maiden name of 'Auld'.

The 1860 Mortality Schedule for Chatham Co., for the year ending 1 Jun 1860, shows a "May Webster" with a DOD of Aug (must be Aug 1859). Age is given as 44 (so b. around 1815), which matches almost exactly what we know of Sarah Auld. We know Richard Webster married Mary Stallings Oct 1860, which would work out about right if first wife Sarah May Auld died Aug 1859. Also, Richard’s last child Elizabeth was b. 29 Jul 1859, so possibly Sarah Auld died from complications of childbirth.

The main problem with this theory is that death certificates of both Norman Webster (b. 1843) and Duncan Webster (b. 1850) show mother's maiden name as 'Hamlet', and I have no idea why.
