  • Notes
    • During the lifetime of Ransome Davis Avent and his son, Ransome Taylor Avant, the Georgia and Alabama Avent family changed the spelling of their surname Avent to Avant. To this day, many of the North Carolina descendants of Col. Thomas Avent still use the older spelling. Many variations of the name will be noted beginning with records of the War of 1812.

      Soldier in War of 1812.

Came to Washington Co, in 1784. Served in War of 1812.

From the US Archives, Wash. DC, Service Records of War of 1812. Ransom Avent was a Pvt. in Squadron A., Cavalry, of the GA Militia. It was commanded by Capt. John Irwin. Ransome was paid $42.73 for 5 months and 6 days of service. He entered service 22 Aug 1813 and was engaged for 6 months. He served at Milledgeville, GA, from 31 Oct 1813 to 2 Mar 1814. Service expired on 28 Jan 1814 and was discharged 24 Jan 1814. He appears to have changed his name to Avant after discharge from military service.

11 Jul 1801--"Joannah Avert and Ransome Avert apply for letters of adm on
estate of Joseph Avert of Washington Co."
Several sources shows birth as 1769. Says Ransome is the third son.
Marriage date was probably 1794 instead of 1795 because the family bible shows Malinda's birth as 1795.

      from Avant, SCF:

"Ransom Avent" appears on the "Montgomery Co., GA, Tax List of 1797-1798". We know that this county was formed from Washington Co in 1793 and the evidence we have to date is that Ransome married Martha Smith in the period 1793-1796.
We are therefore on solid ground concerning Ransome Avent in the 1797 tax record in claiming that he must have been born at least by 1775 and possibly earlier or therebouts. We may have as much as a ten year estimation from this which can be corrected if warrented and as in our estimation concerning his wife as being born ca. 1769 to 1779 we can estimate Ransome was born ca. 1765 to 1775. We can also operate on the theory that Ransome must have been with Joseph, his father, from Cumberland Co, NC, to Richmond Co in 1781; to Washington Co 1784 and either in Wilkes Co. or Washington Co until 1783 and in Montgomery Co 1793 to 1797.
