Avent, George W. (1839-1926) of Moore Co., NC. A veteran of the War Between the States (Capt., Co. D, 35th NC) and a member of the "Immortal 600". This was a group of CSA officers who became famous throughout the South after the War. They were POWs who were used as human shields by US forces and brutally treated throughout their confinement, yet they refused to take the Oath of Allegiance until after Lee's surrender. They were widely seen as an example of men choosing "death before dishonor".

Avent, James Monroe of TN (1859-1936) with world champion dog 'Momoney'. James M. Avent was a well-known trainer of champion bird dogs, and was nicknamed "the Fox of Hickory Valley”. He was described as follows in the March 3, 1930 issue of Time Magazine:
"Most celebrated of contemporary handlers is James Monroe Avent, 70, a shrewd and tight-lipped Tennessee squire who has never been known to play poker with his competitors after a day in the field, who never divulges information as to good quail country which he knows more thoroughly than anyone else." |

Avent, James Monroe, Sr. of TN (1895 - 1995) Also family. Appears to be from the wedding of wife Jeanette's sister, Harriett, to Cmdr. Dudley Morton, USN. Tsingtao, China, 1936. Comdr. Dudley "Mush" Morton was commander of the submarine "Wahoo" during World War II. There is an excellent story of the feats of the Wahoo and Cdr. Morton in the May 1958 issue of Argosy magazine. A monument was erected to his honor in Owensboro, Kentucky, and dedicated on October 7, 1994.The "Wahoo" sank 28 Japanese ships, a number that was only surpassed by the "Tang." Commander Morton went down with his ship in the LaPerouse Straits on October 11, 1943, the result of an aerial bomb. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. |
